How I Find the Right School District and Suburb for Our Family

My simple, practical steps to pick a good school zone and a suburb we can actually afford in Melbourne.

Finding a place to live with kids is more than picking a house. I want a safe, affordable home, and I want it in a good school zone. I am numbers‑minded, so I spent hours figuring out a simple way to balance both.

Here is what works for our family.

For the full school-zone workflow and linked resources, use this hub: School Zones in Melbourne: How We Pick Suburbs for Our Family.

Step 1: Start with School Rankings

I start at Better Education. I scan recent rankings for public primary schools. I shortlist schools that fit our kids and our values. It takes time, but it brings focus. The next question is whether we can actually afford to live nearby.

    Step 2: Check Real‑Estate Prices

I look up rental prices and house values on realestate.com.au and domain.com.au. I check if the area fits our budget. If prices are far off, I drop that suburb and move on. Being realistic keeps us sane.

If you are new to renting here, this short guide covers inspections, filters, and applications in plain steps: Finding a Rental House in Australia: Our Simple, Real Experience.

Step 3: Confirm the School Zone

Near a school is not the same as in the school zone. I always confirm using findmyschool.vic.gov.au. Paste the address, and it shows the exact zone. This step has saved us a lot of time and stress.

Step 4: Read the School Data

For a deeper look, I check ICSEA and school reports on myschool.edu.au. I am not chasing the absolute top. I want a balanced school with steady outcomes and a community that feels right.

    A Note on Safety

When two suburbs look similar on schools and price, I compare safety. The RedSuburbs Crime Map helps me spot trends by suburb so I can weigh trade‑offs.

I have looked at more than 400 schools using this process. Now we have a shortlist of suburbs to visit. Next, I will share a few that stood out and why.

If you are doing the same, I hope this helps you find that sweet spot between a good school and a home that does not blow the budget.
